Adopting a rescue dog is a great deed and the dog you have rescued would be thankful to you for giving him a new life. However, there may be many health issues, which your new furry pal may be dealing with. Out of multiple health problems, flea infestation is the most common condition found in rescue pets. If you find bald spots, constant itching and scratching, black specks on fur then these may be the symptoms of flea infestations. In the absence of flea treatment, the condition may become severe. At the same time, your vet may help you know your dog’s status on heartworm and worm infection. Common Health Problems in Rescue Dog
Flea Infestation The presence of fleas and ticks are common among rescue dogs. To relieve your new pet from nasty fleas use any good flea control product such as Frontline plus, Capstar or Nexgard, and clean your house regularly to disrupt the flea life cycle present in your home environment. Intestinal Infection Internal infection or intestinal infection is also common among rescue dogs. It is caused by worms such as roundworm, tapeworm, hookworm and whipworm. Consult your vet to check whether your dog is affected by these intestinal parasites or not. Use wormers such as Drontal for protecting your pet from internal parasites. Skin Infection As rescue dogs are not protected by any flea preventive, they become vulnerable to external parasites and thus exposed to multiple skin problems. These skin issues are the result of excessive itching done by the pet due to itching sensation caused by fleas living on his body. The pet would further lose his fur and may suffer from flea allergy dermatitis. The solution to this problem again lies in making the pet flea free through flea preventive. Stress Due to the troubled past life of the rescued dog, he may behave in an uncommon way or look like a shy or very aggressive dog at times. As a pet parent, keep an eye on your dog’s behavior and spend time with him to make him feel comfortable and a part of the family. The state of rescue dogs is not good as there are many who are homeless and waiting for a person to come and make them part of their family. Your new partner will always be grateful to you for adding value and care to his life. Comments are closed.
