A state of emergency occurs when a dog’s stomach bloats. It is “dagger in chest” news for the pet-parents. What did you infer by bloat? Or more precisely dog bloat? It is a crucial stage where dog’s life is at risk. Bloat is a condition in dogs when their stomach starts to expand with gas, fluids, and causes twisting movements inside the stomach. These twists and turns inside causes pressure to build up which leads to cut off the blood supply. This stops the working of a part of stomach or the entire stomach.

The medical name of a dog bloat is Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV).  If left untreated or late treatment may lead to fatalities to the dogs. Better work is to find out the early signs, be attuned to the symptoms, and treat dog diseases at an early stage.

Warning Signs Of Bloat In Your Dog

Few signs of dog bloat are:

  • Excessive drooling
  • Swollen gut
  • Anxiety
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Weakness
  • Not able to vomit even if it feels so

With the progression of the problem, he might go into a panic state, his gums may become pale and swell, pulse might become weak.

You must be wondering what might have caused such serious issues in the dogs. Bloating reasons vary; it might be because of nay of the following:

  • Eating too quickly
  • Having one large meal in a day
  • A lot of exercise after a meal like running
  • Stress
  • Having too much to eat or drink at once
  • Staying with dogs who have bloat

However, causes may also depend upon the type of breed. Some breeds of dogs are much more susceptible to getting bloat than the others like Great Danes, Poodles, German Shepherds, Blood Hounds etc.

Dogs must be prevented from having bloats in their lifetime. It is a serious threat to their lives and not at all a light disease that can be treated easily. Treatment depends upon the severity of the bloat in the dog’s stomach. The vet might have to treat the dog with fluids, antibiotics or surgically remove bloat.

But, prevention is always a healthy option. Preventing bloats from happening in dogs can save them from a very big life-endangering problem. Some basic and common prevention to follow are:

  • Don’t  let him run or perform exercise after he has had his meal.
  • Make sure his intake of water is normal.
  • Reduce stress and make the surroundings more cozy and soothing.
  • Provide him with few small meals in a day rather than a single heavy meal.
  • Look out for any signs and consult a vet if you have slightest of the doubt regarding his health.
