Ticks are the parasites that can be very dangerous because of their disease transmitting characteristics. They can transmit diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Tick paralysis, Anaplasmosis, Cytauxzoonosis (a disease specific to cats) and etc.

These creeps can be found in tall grass, bushes, and shrubs where the environment is moist, wooden and shady so that they can hide and quest for a host. And, since its summer season, it won’t be wrong to say that this season is their feast season because you, like many people, like to go out for hiking and camping in the woods with your pet.

Hence, you and your pet are at the maximum risk of getting infested with these pesky parasites in this summer season. However, you as a human can easily get away with tick bites by using insect repellents and regularly inspecting yourself but poor pets that are more vulnerable to tick infestations can’t protect themselves, and that’s why, as a perfect pet parent, saving your pet from falling prey to these blood-suckers is the need of the hour.

 What To Do Then?

Well, this is the question that pops up in your brain. You already know about the flea and tick treatments that are one of the best ways to start with, when it comes to preventing ticks. But there are many more aspects of protecting your pets from ticks and you can have a glance at them below.

 1.   Terminate Ticks From Your Backyard Or Garden

A yard is a place where most of the pets get infested by ticks. As discussed above, ticks love to stay in wooden, damp and shady areas and your yard, especially in spring and summer season, is a paradise for them because besides getting an ideal place to live they even get hosts on whom they can attach and feed. Therefore, you need to treat the yard with flea and tick treatments like Diatomaceous Earth and make sure that there is no waste wood, a pile of dead leaves, moist tall grass and bushes in the yard. Separate the playing area and barricade it so that ticks cannot enter.

2.   Take Out Time To Check Your Pet For Tick Infestations

Make sure that each day while playing with your pet, you feel the skin and comb the fur to search if there are any ticks attached to your pet’s skin. Places to focus are - ears, under their tail and around the anus, belly, face, toes, and armpits. Keep a pair of tweezers to remove ticks instantly if you find one.

3.   Tick Treatments And Repellents For Your Pets

Yes, this is indeed the best option but the above two processes also have to be followed to make sure that ticks don’t re-emerge. There are many tick treatments like Bravecto Topical for dogs, , Nexgard for dogs, Frontline Plus for dogs, and etc. These treatments kill existing ticks on your pets and if administered regularly they keep your pet flea and tick free throughout the year.

There are also repellent tick collars like
  • Scalibor Collar for dogs
  • Bayopet kiltix collars for dogs
  • Preventic collar for dogs
  • Seresto collar for dogs
  • Sereso collar for cats

Vaccines for Lyme disease can also be considered to protect your pet from tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease. However, the effectiveness of the Vaccine is still in question and many experts believe that the vaccine works best if Tick repellent is also used on pets.

Henceforth, if you are contemplating on going out with your pet-
  • Make sure you have your pet secured with a repellent or treatment,
  • You are ready to check your pet for ticks frequently
  • And also you have made your yard tick free
